Chemicals

PMT and vPvM substances under REACH

Wordcloud PMT substances

PMT/vPvM substances are persistent and mobile in the aquatic environment. These intrinsic substance properties allow them to spread to the sources of our drinking water. Contamination can be irreparable as these substances remain in the environment and break through filters and survive drinking water treatment. Consequently, registrants under REACH must minimise any emissions into the environment.

Small-scale drinking water supplies

Fenced well to prevent drinking-water contamination.

Small-scale systems are important for a safe supply with drinking-water, particularly in rural areas. Experience has shown that they are often facing challenges, for example with respect to qualification of operators, resource protection and surveillance. Generating an enabling environment is therefore important for their safe operation.

Safe management of drinking water supplies

Scheme of the Water Safety Plan concept: What can go wrong in our water supply? What risks does this cause for our supply? How can we control them? How do we know that they are under control?

Drinking-water is most likely safe if all process steps – i.e. abstraction, treatment and distribution – are working as they should. This requires proper management during planning, construction and installation, operation and maintenance of the entire system from catchment to consumer. Also, good understanding of these processes facilitates early identification of potentially present weaknesses.

Distributing drinking water

Drinking water which has been treated in a waterworks or drawn directly from an on-site well must meet the requirements of the German Drinking Water Ordinance all the way to the tap. Its distribution via the water company’s mains and the drinking water systems of individual buildings brings it into contact with a large range of substances. It is essential for the quality not to be impaired.
