High-level Panel Discussion "Plastics waste management and prevention of marine litter in a circular economy" with representatives of DG Environment, the European Parliament, major EU Plastic Associations, OSPAR Commission and the German Environment Agency
Plastic litter is ubiquitous in the marine environment occurring everywhere from remote shorelines to the deep sea. Plastics are responsible for about ¾ of this waste. More recycling in a closed-loop management is needed to decrease the input of plastic litter in the oceans. Despite of recent development in recycling, still 30% of plastic waste falls out of the circle and is landfilled in Europe as a source for marine litter. Diverse barriers stay in the way of more use of recyclates. We want to discuss in a panel economic and legal instruments - such as targets for recyclates in products or waste specific recycling rates - to improve the status and to push and pull for more recycling.
