    BAU-I-3: Cooling degree days

The line chart illustrated in BAU-I-3 ‘Cooling degree days’ shows the mean of cooling degree days for 1951 to 2017 in summer climate regions according to DIN-4108-2:2013-2 in Kelvin per day. The illustration differentiates between the summer climate regions A, B and C. All three lines show a significantly rising trend over the years with distinct high points in 2003 and 2018, albeit with distinct fluctuations from year to year.

VE-I-2: Low-water restrictions to shipping on the Rhine

The illustration entitled VE-I-2 ’Low-water restrictions on the Rhine’ is a grouped bar chart showing the number of days for the period of 1997 to 2021 when the equivalent water level values at the gauges of Maxau (Upper Rhine), Kaub (Middle Rhine) and Ruhrort (Lower Rhine) were not attained. Non-attainment of the equivalent water level signifies restrictions on the draught of vessels navigating the Rhine. There is no significant trend discernible for the Upper Rhine or the Middle Rhine.

    FW-I-7: Forest condition

A line graph shows the mean crown defoliation in percent for the total forest and the tree species spruce, pine, beech and oak for the period 1991 to 2017. For beech there is a significant increasing trend, for oak it is quadratically decreasing. There is no trend for the other tree species and the total forest.

    WW-I-8: Water temperature in lakes

The line chart WW-I-8 ’Water temperature in lakes’ shows the annual deviation of the mean temperature of surface waters during the season, April to October, compared to the 2014 value for the watercourses in selected regions. The regions considered are the North German Plain – in one case including the river lakes, in another without the river lakes – as well as the uplands and the Alps-and-foothills.

    WW-I-7: Water levels in lakes

The line chart WW-I-7 ’Water levels in lakes’ indicates the annual deviation of the water level in lakes in two regions – the North German Plain and the Alps-and-foothills for the years 1961 to 2021 from the water level in 2014 in centimetres. The water level of the lakes in the North German Plain receded significantly by 2021 compared to 2014; ultimately the deviation amounted to –20 cm compared to 2014.

BD-I-1: Phenological changes in wild plant species

The illustration contains a stacked column chart which shows the beginning and duration of the phenological seasons for the periods of 1951 to 1980, 1981 to 2010 and 1992 to 2021. This demonstrates that, by comparison, winter has become shorter which also applies to spring and high summer. The early summer has become longer by approximately two days.
