The total share of renewable energies in energy consumption (electricity, heat and transport) rose to 22 per cent in Germany in 2023. In 2022, this share was at 20.8 per cent. This positive development was the result of a growth of renewables in the electricity and heat sector while overall energy demand declined.
The German Environment Agency is committed to protecting the oceans, which are more important than ever. They buffer climate change, host biodiversity, provide food and raw materials, serve as living and recreational spaces, and are transport routes. At the same time, the North and Baltic Seas face many human activities, leaving their marine environment in poor condition.
More than one tenth of Germany's land surface is suited for wind turbines - without causing significant harm to sensitive protected areas or compromising noise protection laws.
