New Global Framework on Chemicals adopted

The 5th International Conference on Chemicals Management took place from 25 to 29 September 2023

The Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) adopted at the fifth International Conference on Chemicals Management (ICCM5) in Bonn sets concrete targets and guidelines for the entire lifecycle of chemicals. In addition to this framework, the conference also adopted the Bonn Declaration, in which ministers and delegation leaders committed to the implementation of the GFC.

Chemicals are a major driver for global warming, biodiversity loss and pollution. Bold political action is urgently needed. The Fifth World Chemicals Conference (ICCM5) 25-29 September 2023 in Bonn/Germany is bound to set up a stronger policy framework for the sound management of chemicals at global level.

The Strategic Approach to International Chemicals Management (SAICM) is a voluntary framework for achieving responsible chemicals management worldwide. With its cross-sectoral approach and broad stakeholder involvement, it is unique. However, SAICM's overarching "2020 goal" for chemicals management has not been achieved.
