Digital technologies can be harnessed to make an important contribution to the global sustainability transformation. Individually and in sum, the technologies harbour potential to bring about important ecological, societal and economic change. Gearing digitalisation towards sustainability requires creating the necessary conditions to achieve this aim.
In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 goals for worldwide socially, ecologically and economically sustainable development (Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs). The SDG 12 database shows which developments have taken place in Germany since then with regard to Goal 12 "Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns". It currently comprises more than 120 activities.
UBA together with UNDP, UNEP, Future Earth, ISC, ITU and Kenya is championing the Coalition for Digital Environment Sustainability – CODES, which brings together science community, governmental institutions, UN Bodies, tech companies, and civil society.
The German Environment Agency (UBA) supports the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at all levels after the UN Member States adopted them in September 2015. In addition to implementation at national and local level, UBA's efforts in the area of sustainability focus on an implementation of the SDGs at EU level.
