Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing mankind today. Although we have seen a tremendous increase in scientific findings on the pending risks and knowledge of potential options for action over the past decades, global greenhouse gas emissions which are the reason for man-made climate change still continue to rise alarmingly.

According to the Council of European Producers of Materials for Construction (CEPMC), more than 20,000 different products and materials are used in Europe for constructing buildings and infrastructure.

A new regulation concerning the Registration, Evaluation, and Authorisation of Chemicals (REACH) was proposed by the European Commission on October 29, 2003 (EC, 2003a). The regulation puts major responsibility on industry for ensuring the safe manufacture, import, and use of chemicals throughout the chemical supply chain and for documenting this in their registration dossiers.

As a Party to the United Nations Framework on Climate Change (UNFCCC), since 1994 Germany has been obliged to prepare, publish and regularly update national inventories of greenhouse-gas emissions.

International airspace and the High Seas constitute global environmental goods (open-accessgoods), the use and consumption of which do not fall under the jurisdiction of any national sovereign body. Open-access-goods are primarily characterized by the non-rivalry of consumption and their non-exclusiveness, that is: they can be used by anyone virtually without restrictions.

The ability of microorganisms to transform environmental contaminants to final products harmless to man and environment has been a subject of laboratory investigations since the 60ies. Since the early 80-ies biotechnological remediation techniques for treating soil, groundwater and air have been developed and applied on this basis.
