The Climate Change Mitigation Potential of the Waste Sector
This study presents the greenhouse gas (GHG) mitigation potential of municipal solid waste (MSW) management in OECD countries as well as India and Egypt. Three detailed GHG balances for the USA, India, Egypt and one balance for the OECD countries are elaborated applying the life cycle assessment (LCA) method according to ISO 14040/14044 for waste management.
Accounting Systems for Short-lived Climate Pollutants and Greenhouse Gas Mitigation in the Waste Management Sector
The Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) Municipal Solid Waste Initiative (MSW Initiative) is looking for an emission quantification tool focused on short-lived climate pollutants (SLCPs) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) to be used in participating cities.
Costs of meeting international climate targets without nuclear power
This report assesses the impact of a global phase-out of nuclear energy by 2050 on the costs of meeting international climate policy targets in 2020. The analyses are based on simulations of a reference scenario and a nuclear phase out scenario with the global energy systems model POLES.
Reduction of environmental risks from the use of biocides: Environmental sound use of disinfectants, masonry preservatives and rodenticides
In November 2009 a framework action plan for achieving a sustainable use of pesticides was established by Directive 2009/128/EC on the basis of the corresponding Thematic Strategy. It aims at minimising hazards and risks for human health and the environment.
Validation and quality assurance of methods for the substance flow analysis for large carbon dioxide loads from CO2 separation in CCS power stations
This report describes the specification of a suitable measurement system for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of fluids with a high carbon dioxide content, as is typical for CCS systems. The use of continuous CO2 measurement equipment in industrial plant is possible. The measurement method used works reliably with the established quality assurance measures.
Impacts of Scrubbers on the environmental situation in ports and coastal waters
International and European regulations permit the use of scrubbers to comply with the sulfur limits for marine fuel. Some scrubbers generate wastewater, which is discharged into the marine environment. The current environmental status of German coastal waters is moderate to poor.
Checklists for surveying and assessing industrial plant handling materials and substances, which are hazardous to water
Based on recommendations by international river basin and water body commissions, a checklist concept was developed as a tool to efficiently evaluate the condition of installations handling substances and preparations hazardous to water. It comprises an overview of potential fields of action as well as specific checklists subdivided by functional units, sectors and risk areas.

Final Report of the Project „Using Standardized Baselines (CDM) for Achieving Climate Policy Goals in Developing Countries (Suppressed Demand)”
Standardised Baselines (SBs) shall improve the opportunities for least developed countries and other underrepresented regions to participate in the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). SBs allow for shifting the effort of developing baseline scenarios and additionality testing from the individual project to the sectoral level.
