Background and Goals
The aim of the project is to detect so far realized adaptation measures in Germany to adapt to climate change and evaluate the experiences gained. To this end, an Internet-based measures database is designed, documented own measures in the interested parties and provides information about other measures. A competition will also be conducted to determine particularly exemplary adaptation measures and to make known to a wide audience.
Project objectives:
- Recording of projects run in Germany on local and regional climate change adaptation;
- creation of an online database (Tatenbank) for self-recording of adaptation projects and promotion of discussion between those responsible for different measures;
- publication of the database and good practical examples using a competition and a brochure;
- expert support for UBA/KomPass on the production of the adaptation action plan.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change
Step 1: Understand and describe climate change
different for the adaptation projects and adaptation actions
- River flooding
- Heat waves
- Flash floods
- Altered rainfall patterns
- Higher average temperatures
- Sea level rise und storm surges
- Low water
- Extreme precipitation (incl. hail, snow)
- Storm
- Dry periods
- short term = next year’s / decades
- medium term = to 2050
Step 2a: Identify and assess risks - climate effects and impact
depending on the respective adaptation actions
Step 3: Develop and compare measures
The project was primarily intended to record and describe adaptation measures, with a focus on local and regional and completed or currently implemented measures in Germany. The objectives, conflicts and constraints of the adaptation measures are queried in the online database (Tatenbank).
Step 4: Plan and implement measures
The central product of this project is the "Tatenbank" with concrete and implemented measures for adaptation are listed. Users of the Tatenbank can check the adaptation measures, learn from successes, conflicts and obstacles and can be motivated to imitate the possible adaptation examples.
Costs of the adaptation measures are normally queried in the online database.
Step 5: Watch and evaluate adaptation (monitoring and evaluation)
The descriptions of the adaptation measures also contain information on conducted monitoring activities or evaluation strategies.
