DYNALP - enhanced value for nature and landscape for marketing and tourism in the rural Alps

Background and Goals

In 2003, the "Alliance in the Alps" community network set up the DYNALP project as part of the EU alpine region programme, with Mäder (Austria) as the coordinator supported by 52 other communities and regions from Switzerland, Liechtenstein, Germany, Italy, Slovenia and Austria. With this programme, the EU is aiming to strengthen the Alpine region as a central geographical unit and to support sustainable development across borders, which coincides with the objectives of the community network. The follow-up project is DYNALP2.

The objective is to run projects (known as pilot actions) in the following areas, which deal with implementation of the Alpine Convention protocols: 1. Tourism, 2. Conservation and landscape preservation, 3. Mountain agriculture, and 4. Sustainable development and spatial planning.

The communities want the project to mobilise local knowledge on how to achieve sustainable development in rural areas. Alongside the community projects, sharing of experiences across linguistic and cultural borders was the most important objective.

The following results will be achieved:

  1. Development of a publicly accessible database of example projects ("good practice" examples);
  2. Development of new methods for sustainable development in communities;
  3. Provision of insights on sustainable regional development in Europe through evaluation of the projects;
  4. Documentation of the results and instruments for achievement of greater innovative capacity in small communities;
  5. Establishment of a communication structure for additional communities.

The specific results of the project are used to develop the existing "Alliance in the Alps" community network. This network is continuing implementation of the Alpine Convention at community level and, through its work, provides a basis for quality assurance in the project. As a result, the community network is making an important long-term contribution to sustainable regional development in the Alpine region.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

Climate scenarios not used

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Only measures designed to implement the Alpine Convention protocols are analysed, not those involving adaptation to climate change. The measures studied are primarily intended to ensure sustainable development, promote communication and dissemination of knowledge between the communities involved and encourage participation in solution strategies. Therefore, they may also be useful for future adaptation to climate change.
