DYNALP2 - communities for sustainable development in the Alps

Background and Goals

DYNALP2 is a project by the "Alliance in the Alps" community network, which will apply the findings from the CIPRA "Future in the Alps" project at a community level. DYNALP2 is the community network's continuation of the work begun in the Interreg DYNALP project for implementation of sustainable development in the Alps.

The core focus and the major budget items are projects in the communities that make a concrete contribution to implementing the Alpine Convention. The projects supported will be based around one or more of the following areas: Regional value creation, social action capability, conservation areas, mobility, new forms of decision making, policies and instruments.

The objective is to support community-level projects that are based around one or more of the specified areas. Example projects will be adopted from the "Good Practice" collected by the "Future in the Alps" project.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

No separate scenarios

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Measures and/or strategies

Background and objectives: Adaptation measures for climate change are not analysed. The projects are primarily intended to support sustainable development, improve communication and disseminate knowledge. Participation at community level is important to achieve this. Experience from the first DYNALP2 workshops show that the practical benefits to communities of active knowledge sharing are extensive. Examples of research issues and workshop themes include:

  • Regional value creation and social capital from a sustainability perspective;
  •  Social action capability: What keeps young people in the valleys? Prescriptions and success stories to prevent outward migration and dealing with changing age structures;
  •  Conservation areas: Protecting nature / Utilising nature - Conservation and regional economic benefits in conservation areas;
  •  Tourism, leisure and commuter transport: Soft mobility - More than a buzzword;
  •  Decision making, policies and instruments: Involvement of the population; participation; new inclusion and decision making processes, including in respect of demographic developments;
  • Policies and instruments: From study to implementation: How do we implement what science is telling us?
Conflicts / synergies / sustainability

Fundamental criterion for selection of projects is their contribution to supporting sustainable development in the Alps.
