Green climate oases: Integrated city green development in Berlin Marzahn-Hellersdorf

Background and Goals

In the course of climate change, urban greenery is of immense importance to major cities such as Berlin. Urban green influences, among other things, the air quality and the rainwater management and provides for cooling effects. The preservation and (further) development of green spaces in the context of climate-adapted urban development responds to climate change challenges such as increasing heat or dry periods and heavy rainfall events and has a positive impact on the quality of life in the city. Climate oases "and their" quality of stay "plays a major role. For the development of these positive effects, a climate-adapted plant and care of green spaces is inevitable in the medium term.
In the long term, sustainable green urban development is only possible in cooperation and with the participation of politics, city administration, neighborhood management, environmental and nature conservation initiatives, business, science and the population or their stakeholders. The community development of urban greenery has great potential for social participation and social interaction.
The aim of the project is to provide a holistic example that can serve as a nationwide model for integrated urban green development based on cooperation and participation and flanked by appropriate educational and public relations work. As part of a participatory process, a series of measures for the sustainable development of "Green Climate Oases" are being implemented in the Berlin district of Marzahn-Hellersdorf. In parallel, the adaptation capacity of the partners involved will be increased by motivating and empowering them to engage in a green, climate-friendly municipality. This should lead to a self-sustaining process, in which the administration pulls together with all stakeholders to make the district fit for climate change.

Measures and/or strategies

The project is working on three main areas of work, in the context of which specific pilot measures for climate-adapted urban green development will be developed and implemented, accompanied by appropriate educational and public relations work:
1. Climate-adapted green development: The focus is on the qualification of existing or the creation of new green spaces with regard to an optimized adaptation effect (in particular cooling and rainwater management).
2. Climate-adapted green area maintenance: This is about a climate-adapted care of green areas in the district.
3. Accessibility and quality of stay of ubran greenery: Central is the increase of the degree of familiarity, the accessibility and the quality of stay of existing green areas.
