FINESSI – Integrated assessment modelling of global change impacts and adaptation

Background and Goals

FINESSI is a three year project for developing a computer-based evaluation framework for investigating the effects of global change on different natural and managed systems in Finland.

Objectives:

  • Development of a web-based modelling framework for estimating the impacts of a range of global change scenarios on several natural and managed systems in Finland along with their attendant uncertainties
  • Stimulation of new research into the modelling of global change impacts on biological species distributions using the abundant empirical information held at the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE)
  • Use of hydrological, water quality, forest management and possibly other models to investigate impacts and possible adaptation measures under a changing environment
  • Provision of a tool for the dissemination of research results and a pedagogical device for displaying indicators of current and  future environmental change in Finland and estimated impacts and adaptations in selected impact areas.

Steps in the process of adaptation to climate change

Step 1: Understand and describe climate change

Approach and results

FINESSI makes use of global change scenarios developed in the FINSKEN project of the Finnish Research Programme on Global Change (FIGARE). These scenarios are based on the IPCC SRES scenarios.

Further times

Periods available in the FINESSI Web Tool are:

- 2010-2039,

- 2040-2069, or

- 2070-2099.

Step 2a: Identify and assess risks - climate effects and impact

Approach and results

investigating the effects of global change on different natural and managed systems

Step 3: Develop and compare measures

Time horizon
  • 2011–2040 (near future)
  • 2051–2080 (far future)
  • 2071–2100 (far future)
