The German Federal Ecodesign Award 2019 has been announced, and once again, businesses of all sizes and sectors, designers and students can enter their products or services in the contest for the highest national prize for ecodesign. Deadline for submission of entries is 8 April.

The German Federal Ecodesign Award is given in the four competition categories “Product”, “Concept”, “Service” and “Young Talent”. The quality of the entries is evaluated in a multi-stage procedure by experts from the German Environment Agency, the Advisory Council and a high-ranking jury. Market leaders, start-ups, local providers and global players alike are welcome to participate in the contest as are design studios, architectural and engineering offices. Students are eligible to compete in the “Young Talent” category.

Federal Environment Minister Svenja Schulze said: “The Federal Ecodesign Award has been Germany’s highest national award for ecodesign since 2012. Ecodesign means that designers take account of ecological processes from the very beginning. I have the honour to award this prestigious prize again in 2019.”

President Maria Krautzberger of the German Environment Agency said: “Good design means quality in both ecology and design itself – more than just an outer shell which has been greenwashed. There is likely no other award where this aspect is scrutinised as closely and expertly as with the Federal Ecodesign Award.”

Award winners will be celebrated at a festive event to be held at the Federal Ministry for Environment on 26 November 2019. Prize money for the next-generation design projects is 1,000 euros each. Professional image trailers will be produced for award promotion purposes and made available to the award winners. A public touring exhibition of all the nominated and winning entries will be staged in 2020.

The exhibition of the 2018 Award opens on 11 February 2019 in Ludwigsburg.

The contest has been announced every year since 2012 by the Federal Ministry for Environment (BMU) and the German Environment Agency (UBA) in collaboration with the International Design Center Berlin (IDZ).
