Federal Environment Minister Steffi Lemke said: “The design of a product largely determines how good or harmful it is for the environment. This is what makes the EU Commission's initiative for sustainable products so important. I am working among the group of EU member states to ensure that only truly sustainable products that can be repaired or recycled enter the domestic market in the future. For more than ten years now, the winning projects of the German Ecodesign Award have repeatedly shown what sustainable products or services of the future can look like. The unique selling point of the award is that it combines outstanding design with ecological aspects. Environmentally friendly products and services are the key to sustainable consumption.”
Dirk Messner, President of the German Environment Agency (UBA), said: “The winning projects make an impressive show of what ecodesign can really be. For our future we need more of these types of bold ideas which challenge established infrastructures and thought patterns and offer intelligent solutions.”

The Federal Environment Ministry and the German Environment Agency (UBA) have granted the German Ecodesign Award every year since 2012 together with the International Design Center Berlin. The contest honours entries in the four categories "Product", "Service", "Concept" and "Newcomer" that are convincing in terms of environmental protection and their design. It is aimed at companies of all sizes and from all sectors as well as students.
The competition emphasises innovativeness, design quality and environmental properties. Effects on popular culture and consumer behaviour are taken into account along with the entire product life cycle, from the preliminary stages of production, manufacturing, distribution and use to "end of life".
